The city hereafter: a stage for movement

Cities today enjoy renewed interest and growth. During the seventies and eighties of the 20th century, they were in decline: the population of the three largest cities dropped significantly because many city dwellers sought refuge in so called growth centres, at some distance from the city. Recently there has been a shift in the opposite direction. The advantages of the city, like proximity to work and proximity to facilities such as shopping malls, hospitals and theatres, are being appreciated again.

What will be the effect of this renewed interest in our cities? How will cities develop in the future? How to move people and commodities into and through metropolitan areas? Will our cities become more compact or will new developments create an urban palette in the region, where high densities, green spaces and lower densities alternate? What transport planning challenges will we encounter? Will it be carbon neutral cities with a sustainable mobility system? What about accessibility, access roads, the role of urban public transport, and how much room is there for cycling and walking?

And what will this revival of cities do to the peripheral regions, with a decreasing population, fewer facilities available and a diminishing viability for public transport? Who can and will be living in the countryside in the future? And how do they get where they need to be?

The CVS congress invites you to discuss these issues. Very practical contributions - for example on the city as a bottleneck in accessibility– are appreciated, but we also welcome more philosophical considerations - for example on the psychology of city mobilists – as well as visionary outlooks at (sustainable) carbon neutral cities and new transportation systems.

Participation
Participation in the CVS congress is possible by submitting a paper and presenting it during the congress. You write your own personal contribution. This contribution can discuss a completed study, but just as well a new, not yet fully thought through idea, an attractive design, a new method or a well underpinned opinion. A commentary paper on a contribution to a previous CVS congress is also possible. You are free to choose your own topic. Your paper can be short or long. If you choose a longer contribution, please note that there is a limit of 15 pages (including attachments). Shorter contributions are appreciated. The guidelines for writing papers can be found here.

Contributions must be registered in advance. You can register until June 15, 2010 on our website, via "CVS 2010" and "Aanmelden". You can also click here. The final papers must be submitted at the website no later than August 31. A paper should not exceed three authors of which at least one author is a participant in the 2010 CVS congress. If too many papers are registered, the congress organisation reserves the right to select papers based on date of notification, relationship with the theme of the congress and the quality of the paper.

Full papers need to be submitted between the 16th of June and the 31st of August. Papers in English must include a Dutch abstract. Please note that, although papers in English are possible, the congress language is Dutch. We encourage non-native speakers to present in Dutch. Some (basic) knowledge of the Dutch language will be necessary to fully benefit from all that the congress and its delegates have to offer.

To participate in the CVS congress, each participant must register personally. This is also possible on our website, until August 31. Each participant is author of one or more contributions to the CVS. Each participant will hold no more than two presentations. We strongly encourage full participation of the congress for the whole two days.

Date and location
The CVS 2010 takes place on the 25th and 26th of November in the Theater Hotel Roermond. Information on this location can be found on our website.
